At the Livestock Investment Forum organised by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) on Friday, 27 March 2026, the Minister for National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas, Rachmat Pambudy, emphasised the importance of research, innovation, and global collaboration in driving the transformation of Indonesia’s livestock sector.
The Livestock Investment Forum serves as a collaborative platform designed to accelerate the development of the livestock sector through the integration of research, investment, and technological innovation, by bringing together government, researchers, industry players, and international partners to strengthen livestock investment and technology.
The forum also acts as a knowledge-sharing platform among national and international stakeholders, including partners from Europe and global organisations such as FAO, to support food security, particularly in meat and dairy commodities.
In his remarks, Minister Rachmat stressed that improving livestock productivity must begin with strengthening upstream fundamentals, particularly the quality of breeding stock and feed availability.
“We must first have good-quality breeding stock. Breeding stock is the source of progress in increasing production and productivity. We also have extraordinary livestock feed resources derived from our plantation waste,” he explained.
Furthermore, Minister Rachmat highlighted the significant domestic demand as both an opportunity and a challenge for Indonesia to increase domestic production. The government is targeting a substantial increase in national milk production to reduce the country’s current reliance on imports.
“We are still dependent on milk production, therefore we will strive to achieve dairy self-sufficiency. At present, our production only accounts for around 21 per cent, and we aim to increase it to nearly 96 per cent by 2029. Therefore, research and innovation are essential,” he asserted.
He also underlined that strengthening the livestock sector aligns with the President’s directive to implement development based on science and technology.
“Bappenas will certainly support BRIN, because the source of progress is research and development. As directed by the President, we must work based on the latest scientific research,” he added.
In addition, the forum is intended to support national priority programmes, including strengthening food security and ensuring the success of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) programme, through increasing the availability of high-quality animal protein.
Meanwhile, Head of BRIN, Arif Satria, stated that the Livestock Investment Forum represents an important momentum to build a strong collaborative ecosystem between research and industry. He emphasised the importance of developing dairy cattle breeding technologies to enhance national milk production and productivity.
“Strengthening research does not only focus on increasing production, but also on sustainability. Innovations in livestock nutrition and feed continue to be developed to improve efficiency while reducing environmental impacts, including methane emissions from the livestock sector,” he said.
Furthermore, Arif explained that BRIN, through its flagship programmes in the food sector, continues to promote collaboration with universities, ministries/agencies, and the private sector. These efforts aim to create a livestock system that is adaptive to climate change and sustainable in the long term.
Through synergy between research, investment, and global collaboration, the government remains optimistic that the national livestock sector can grow more rapidly, enhance food self-sufficiency, and strengthen Indonesia’s competitiveness at the global level.
