JAKARTA – Indonesia is preparing to participate in the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, from 13 April to 13 October, 2025. This agenda serves as a primary platform for various countries to reaffirm their commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. Within this five-year agenda, Indonesia's pavilion carries the theme "Thriving in Harmony: Nature, Culture, Future," with the main focus on Indonesia's commitment to sustainable development, including the implementation of green and blue economies for SDGs achievement.
The Indonesian pavilion adopts the design of a boat, representing sustainable development and symbolizing the exploration of future potential, in line with the 2025-2045 National Long-Term Development Plan and the "Sovereign, Advanced, and Sustainable Archipelagic State" goal as part of the realization of the Golden Indonesia 2045 Vision.
"As the largest archipelagic country in the world, inhabited by the fourth-largest population and the second-largest biodiversity in the world, Indonesia has implemented various strategies to achieve the SDGs. Last year, a UN report stated that Indonesia was one of the countries with the most progressive achievements in SDGs among upper-middle-income countries," said the Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas Suharso Monoarfa, as the Responsible National Authority for Indonesia's participation in the 2025 World Expo Osaka in Japan, on Wednesday (2/28). The Minister’s declaration was attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Japan Heri Akhmadi, Mayor of Osaka Hideyuki Yokohama, Secretary-General of the 2025 World Expo Osaka Hiroyuki Ishige, and the Consul Generals and Commissioners General of participating Expo countries.
In the 2023 Global Sustainable Development Report released by the United Nations, Indonesia managed to climb to 75th position, from 102nd back in 2019. Indonesia's SDGs index increased from 64.2 in 2019 to 70.2 in 2023. The report also shows that 63% of indicators have reached their targets, while 16% of other indicators have shown significant improvement. Indonesia is seen as one of the countries with the most progressive achievements in SDGs targets among upper-middle-income countries.
As of February 2024, Indonesia has achieved 63% of the total assessable SDGs indicators. The Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas’ Deputy for Maritime Affairs and Natural Resources Vivi Yulaswati emphasized the urgency of improving target achievements, especially by ensuring sustainable development for global challenges such as the Triple Planetary Crisis, including climate, pollution, and environmental resilience.
"Between 50-75% of the world's population is threatened by climate change by 2100. Air pollution causes the death of 4.2 million people annually, and around 1 million plants and animals are threatened with extinction," said Deputy Vivi.
